Realistic Goal Setting

As you can imagine I get all kinds of inquiry calls at my office. One of the main questions I ask people who call about my services is “what are your goals for the next 6 months?” I sometimes receive interesting answers and I advise my clients to make goals that challenge you yet at the same time are reachable. For instance…. if you tell me that you want to make $5000 per speaking engagement and speak at least once a week, yet have to date only done one or two pro-bono engagements – that isn’t a realistic goal. A more realistic goal might be to book at least 2 engagements per month where at least one of those is paid (say with an honorarium of $1000 – 1500). For those calling me about media advice…. I’ve lost count on the number of people who have said to me “my goal is to be on Oprah”….. we all want that – a more realistic goal to start with might be to appear on your local major network affiliates and then work your way to some of the national programs.

Especially with the new year that will be here in a 2 ½ months – the time of year when we all look at the past year and set goals for the new one – an important thing to keep in mind is to look at how you can make 2010 as successful as possible while staying within the realms of what is realistically achievable for you in the new year.
